New Members Application procedure        Ready Pack info

All applicants must complete an application form, have no Criminal Record, have their own transportation and attend an interview.
You will be required to bring a COPY of your valid Level 1 Occupational First Aid Certificate with Transportation Endorsement, a copy of your Driver's License and a current Driver's Abstract to your interview.
We accept only enthusiastic people who are willing to commit to training twice a month, a business meeting once a month, plus events and searches. A search is an emergency and can happen at any time. Our volunteers need to be ready to be deployed into the field at a moment's notice.

Please read the following before filling in our application form at the end of this page.

Applicant requirements and skills

Prospective members must have a home life and employment situation that will allow full participation in training, search and rescue operations, and other activities of the team. Some operational tasks take place overnight and often into the next day.
I need volunteer experience for my chosen career, can I join KSAR to get this?
NO, we do not accept
prospective Fire Rescue trainees, Paramedics, future RCMP members or students.

SAR teams are all run by volunteers, and recruiting takes up a huge amount of our resources. DO NOT join us just to get our name on your resume. DO NOT take up a valuable spot on our GSAR course unless you know in your heart you will return the investment of time and effort we put into you. If you join us you are committing to all the responsibilities of being a member. We are a charity for helping find lost people, not a charity for helping your career. We gladly accept EMS members when they are settled in their career and have a better understanding of their time schedule and availability.

You must be in good physical condition and have the ability to travel safely anywhere outdoors in all seasons.
You should be familiar with Kamloops and the surrounding area including the parks and their trails and have adequate personal equipment that will allow you to operate effectively and safely in the outdoors for at least a 24 hour period. Additional Pack Info

Should you lack any of the above requirements but are interested in supporting KSAR in a fundraising or administrative role, please email us.

Kamloops Search and Rescue expects a minimum TWO YEAR commitment to the Society upon receiving GSAR certification.
New members must be 19 years of age or older and have no Criminal Record.

The Role of the Kamloops Search and Rescue Team

The role of Kamloops Search and Rescue includes the following:
1. Assisting policing agencies and the BC Ambulance Service in the search and rescue of missing and injured persons and sometimes include evidence searches.
2. Assisting policing agencies and the Provincial Coroner's Service in body recovery operations;
3. Assisting municipal agencies in search, rescue, Communications, and other roles during civil Emergencies;
4. Promoting education of the public in outdoor safety, First aid, and search and rescue techniques including the Hug A Tree program presented to kids through schools in our community.
Although they are volunteers, the life saving service provided by the members of the Kamloops Search and Rescue Team requires that they maintain the standards of unpaid professionals in assisting municipal and provincial agencies.

Training  &  Commitment of the KSAR team

How much time will I have to put in?
The single biggest reason people leave any volunteer organization is because they cannot keep up the commitment requited. It is vital you understand there is a significant commitment of time and effort when you join KSAR.  After your recruit training is over, there is a regular training three times a month (includes a weekend day), one business meeting a month, special events, social activities, specialty teams, work groups, etc. The logged hours range from 100 to over 500, with the average being 200. And that's just the logged hours - there's untold effort to keep the organizaiton running smoothly that isn't logged.

When the Ground Search & Rescue (GSAR) course is running, training is more intensive.  It is usually once a week on Thursday night plus one weekend training day each month until the course is completed.  Generally this is a 4 month process that ends with an overnight component.

Members-in-training are expected to attend all training sessions and are put on the active callout list.  Participation is monitored prior to being accepted for the GSAR course.  Those who complete the requirements of the training manual and exam, and in the view of the Training Officer would be an asset to the Team, will be brought on as a full member of the Team.
